VENTTURING TO THE OUTER LIMITS

The Oyster Perpetual Explorer and Oyster Perpetual Explorer II evolved from Rolex’s deep involvement with exploration. They go where few people venture. The brand was able to test these watches in real life by equipping polar, mountaineering and caving expeditions over many years. Some of the world’s most intrepid explorers, mountaineers and scientists took these watches to places that tested their reliability in the toughest conditions.

From the 1930s, Rolex began to equip numerous expeditions with Oyster Perpetual watches. The feedback received was used to develop what became known as the Professional category: watches that serve as tools, such as the Explorer and Explorer II. Rolex watches have taken part in some of humanity’s greatest adventures. One such occasion was the 1953 expedition to Everest, led by Sir John Hunt, on which Sir Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay Sherpa become the first to summit the world’s highest mountain.

DESIGNED FOR EXPLORATION

The Explorer, launched in 1953, sets itself apart with a simple design and a highly legible black dial with characteristic 3, 6 and 9 numerals and large index hour markers. It is a tool watch, created to tell time accurately, whatever the circumstances. Even in the dark, the dial is easy to read, thanks to the Chromalight display. Today, the Explorer is available in a 36 mm diameter – the size of the 1953 original model – as well as in a 40 mm diameter.

The Explorer II was introduced in 1971 and, in the same spirit as the Explorer, perpetuates the privileged relationship Rolex enjoys with exploration. Thanks to its 24-hour display comprising an additional, orange hour hand and an engraved bezel, the Explorer II allows the wearer to clearly distinguish daytime from night-time hours – a practical option in places where distinguishing day from night is difficult, such as at the poles at certain times of the year, and in caves – or to read the time in a second time zone.

RESISTING THE EXTREME

Watches in the Explorer range have constantly evolved to meet explorers’ needs, each time becoming more robust and reliable. The Explorer 36 is available in Oystersteel or in a yellow Rolesor version (combining Oystersteel and yellow gold), while the Explorer 40 and Explorer II are made exclusively in Oystersteel. Specially developed for Rolex, Oystersteel is a unique alloy with excellent anti-corrosion properties.
All three models are fitted with an Oyster bracelet, a three-piece link bracelet known for its robustness. Featuring the Rolex-designed and patented Oysterlock folding safety clasp, which prevents accidental opening, it is also equipped with the Easylink comfort extension link; developed by the brand, this allows the wearer to easily adjust the bracelet length by approximately 5 mm.

The Explorer 36 and Explorer 40 are equipped with calibre 3230 while the Explorer II features calibre 3285. Both are self-winding mechanical movements entirely developed and manufactured by Rolex. They offer a power reserve of about 70 hours.

SUPERLATIVE CHRONOMETER CERTIFICATION

Like all Rolex watches, the Explorer and Explorer II are covered by the Superlative Chronometer certification. This designation testifies that every watch leaving the brand’s workshops has successfully undergone a series of tests conducted by Rolex in its own laboratories, according to its own criteria. The Superlative Chronometer status is symbolized by the green seal that comes with every Rolex watch and is coupled with an international five-year guarantee.

Oyster Perpetual GMT-Master II

THE COSMOPOLITAN WATCH

The Oyster Perpetual GMT-Master II is designed to display the time in two different time zones simultaneously. Robust and functional, it is the ideal watch for criss-crossing the globe.

Launched in 1955, the GMT-Master witnessed the rapid expansion of intercontinental travel in the latter half of the 20th century. It even became the official watch of Pan American World Airways, the most prominent American international airline at the time. The GMT-Master, a true “tool watch”, evolved continually to offer increasing technical performance. In 1982, Rolex introduced a new movement that allowed the hour hand to be set independently of the other hands. To clearly mark this evolution, the model fitted with the optimized movement was named the GMT-Master II.

ONE INSTRUMENT, SEVERAL TIME ZONES

The GMT-Master II has an instantly recognizable design with a graduated bezel insert, which is available in various dual-colour combinations – the lower half symbolizing daytime and the upper signalling night-time.

With traditional hour, minute and seconds hands, its triangle-tipped 24-hour hand and bidirectional rotatable bezel with a 24-hour graduated Cerachrom insert, the GMT-Master II can display the time in two time zones simultaneously: either the local time and the reference time, or the local time and that of an alternative time zone.

The latest GMT-Master II is equipped with calibre 3285, a self-winding mechanical movement entirely developed and manufactured by Rolex. A consummate demonstration of technology, it offers outstanding performance in terms of precision, power reserve, convenience and reliability. It is fitted with the exclusive blue Parachrom hairspring and also incorporates the patented Chronergy escapement. The movement’s power reserve extends to approximately 70 hours.

HIGH-TECHNOLOGY CERAMIC

The Cerachrom bezel insert is manufactured in a single piece by Rolex from extremely hard ceramic. This high-tech material is virtually scratchproof and keeps its vibrant colours over time. Rolex broke new ground in 2013 when it introduced its first two-colour, single-piece ceramic bezel insert – blue on one half and black on the other. One year later, the brand released a Cerachrom insert in red and blue – the GMT-Master’s original colours. It carried out pioneering research to develop a red ceramic corresponding to its aesthetic and quality criteria.

Over the years, Rolex presented other colour combinations such as brown and black (2018), and green and black (2022) – on a version with the crown and crown guard on the left side of the case and the date display at 9 o’clock. Its latest innovation is a grey and black Cerachrom insert, unveiled in 2023 on a yellow Rolesor version of the GMT-Master II as well as on a version entirely crafted from 18 ct yellow gold.

SUPERLATIVE CHRONOMETER CERTIFICATION

Like all Rolex watches, the GMT-Master II is covered by the Superlative Chronometer certification.

Oyster Perpetual Day-Date

THE REALIZATION OF AN IDEAL

When midnight strikes, the Oyster Perpetual Day-Date forms a bridge between past and future, between what has been achieved and what remains to be lived. Since 1956, it has borne witness to the greatest moments in history on the wrist of visionaries, virtuosos and pioneers. Those who make each day a promise for the future.

At its launch in 1956, the Day-Date was a major innovation: its was the first calendar wristwatch to indicate, in addition to the date, the day of the week spelt out in full in an arc-shaped window at 12 o’clock on the dial

Made exclusively of precious metals – 18 ct yellow, white or Everose gold or 950 platinum – and accompanied by its emblematic President bracelet, its multiple dials make it the ideal canvas for self-expression

THE DAY-DATE SPEAKS ITS
WEARER'S LANGUAGE

Although the days may be the same whenever you are in the world, they are written differently depending on the language. Using most writing systems – Latin, Arabic, Cyrillic, Hebrew, Japanese, Chinese ideograms and even the Ge’ez alphasyllabary used in the Horn of Africa – the Day-Date expresses the cultural identity of its wearer. Available in a choice of 26 languages, it is a trully international, universal and personal watch.

THE MIRACLE OF MIDNIGHT:
AN IDEAL OF PRECISION

When midnight strikes, the day and date simultaneously change in their respective windows on the dial. This watchmaking feat, the “miracle of midnight”, relies on a disc mechanism. it is the fruit of numerous years of research: from 1950 to 1955 Rolex registered four patents for timepieces featuring an indication of day and date.

Today, the Day-Date is equipped with a new generation movement, calibre 3255, entirely developed and manufactured by Rolex for superlative level of performance.

THE PRESIDENT BRACELET

Created specially for the launch of the prestigious Oyster Perpetual Day-Date in 1956, the three-piece link President bracelet, made only from 18 ct gold or 950 platinum, is still reserved exclusively for the Day-Date and precious metal version of the Datejust.

A PRECIOUS ALLY

Worn by many of the world’s political figures, directors and visionaries, the Day-Date is instantly recognizable, in particular thanks to its emblematic President bracelet, whose evocative name, together with the eminent figures who have worn it, ensured the Day-Date became known as the “presidents’ watch”.

Decades come and go, but the Day-Date remains where it has always been – at the cutting edge of medernity. A timepiece of prestige and the fruit of Rolex’s watchmaking expertise, the Day-Date accompanies those personalities who shape the world in their respective disciplines through their commitment, human qualities and creative genius

Among the Rolex Testinmonees associated with the Day-Date, the brand celebrates American skier Lindsey Vonn, Swiss tennis player Roger Federer, American filmmaker Martin Scorsese and golfers Arnold Palmer, Jack Nicklaus and Gary Player

Oyster Perpetual Air-King

THE SKY IS THE LIMIT

The Oyster Perpetual Air-King celebrates the aeronautical heritage of the original Oyster. It pays tribute to those for whom the sky was a new frontier of adventure, exploration and groundbreaking achievement – a springboard for new ideals.

The Air-King symbolizes the privileged relationship between Rolex and flying during the golden age of aviation in the 1930s. It pays tribute to the pilots of the era and the Oyster’s role in their epic story. The 1930s was a period of spectacular progress in aircraft performance and led to the introduction of long-distance flights. Several pilots set records while wearing an Oyster. Others used a Rolex watch as an on-board chronometer, such as Owen Cathcart-Jones and Ken Waller, who, in 1934, made a return voyage from London (United Kingdom) to Melbourne (Australia) in record time with a twin-engine De Havilland Comet.

UNIQUE AESTHETICS

The current Air-King sports a distinctive black dial with a combination of large 3, 6 and 9 numerals marking the hours and a prominent minutes scale for optimal navigational time readings. Rolex’s symbolic crown is displayed in yellow on the dial, while the seconds hand and the name “Rolex” are green, echoing the brand’s emblematic colour. Since the watch was launched in 1958, the inscription “Air-King” has featured in lettering that makes the model easily identifiable.

From 2022, the Air-King’s 40 mm case includes a crown guard and has straight sides like the majority of Professional category models. The watch’s display has also been refreshed and is perfectly balanced thanks to the addition of a “0” before the “5” on the minutes scale. Each five-minute interval is, therefore, now marked by two digits. The 3, 6 and 9 numerals are also now visible in the dark thanks to the luminescent material of the Chromalight display.

RELIABILITY AND PERFORMANCE

A paragon of robustness and reliability, the Air-King’s Oyster case is guaranteed waterproof to a depth of 100 metres (330 feet). The middle case is crafted from a solid block of Oystersteel, a particularly corrosion-resistant alloy.

The Air-King is fitted on a three-piece link Oyster bracelet in Oystersteel. This bracelet is equipped with an Oysterlock safety clasp, designed and patented by Rolex, which prevents accidental opening. It is also fitted with the Easylink comfort extension link, which allows the wearer to adjust the bracelet length easily, by approximately 5 mm.

Powering the Air-King is calibre 3230, a self-winding mechanical movement entirely developed and manufactured by Rolex. It offers outstanding performance in terms of precision, power reserve, resistance to shocks, convenience and reliability. This movement is fitted with the exclusive blue Parachrom hairspring and also incorporates the patented Chronergy escapement. Its power reserve extends to approximately 70 hours.

SUPERLATIVE CHRONOMETER CERTIFICATION

Like all Rolex watches, the Air-King is covered by the Superlative Chronometer certification.

ROLEX AND THE RYDER CUP

Rolex is Worldwide Partner of The Ryder Cup, the 44th edition of which takes place from 29 September to 1 October 2023 in Italy. Created in 1927, The Ryder Cup is one of the most watched sporting events in the world. Every two years, this team tournament pits Europe against the United States of America. It is contested alternately on each continent. The competition sees today’s best golfers –experienced players and young talent – go head-to-head, each team led by former champions acting as non-playing captains.

Play Video

The Ryder Cup reflects outstanding qualities: selflessness, solidarity and faith in the team. The matches, sometimes fierce, unfold with utmost respect between opponents. These encounters are also privileged moments of transmission between accomplished champions and younger elite golfers.

Accompanying the European team since 1995, Rolex has also been Worldwide Partner of The Ryder Cup since 2021.

THE FORMULA FOR SUCCESS

The unique concept of The Ryder Cup – three days of competition, pairs and singles match-ups, no prize money – creates a spirit of camaraderie and cooperation that transcends the usual rivalries of the professional circuit. The first two days are devoted to matches between pairs. From fourball matches (each player plays his own ball and only the best score counts) to foursome matches (teammates take turns to play the same ball), the pairs formed in each team compete in match-play format, seeking to win each hole by completing it in the fewest number of strokes. At the end of each contest, the duo who wins the most holes wins the match and a point for their team. Sunday is devoted to 12 singles matches, still in match play format. The first team to accumulate more than 14 points wins the coveted Samuel Ryder Trophy. In the event of a tie, the trophy is retained by the defending champion.

THE BUZZ OF THE CUP

With more than 200,000 spectators present over the three days of competition and millions of television viewers around the world, The Ryder Cup is an exceptional event in the world of golf.

It unites players and fans in the passionate support of a team, creating an ambience unlike any other in golf. The clamour of the crowd pushes players to give their all for the good of the collective. In this spirit, during the 2018 edition in France, Rolex Testimonee Francesco Molinari made competition history by winning all five of his matches, four doubles and the singles. Before him, no European player had achieved such a feat.

ROLEX AND GOLF
A FOUNDATION OF SHARED VALUES

Golf is more than a sport. It embodies values that make it an experience unlike any other. Precision, integrity, humility and respect. These are values that are also deeply rooted in Rolex’s identity. It is for this reason that, for almost 60 years, Rolex has supported golf. This long-standing commitment was initiated in 1967 with legendary champion Arnold Palmer, who was joined by Jack Nicklaus and Gary Player, known as The Big Three. It now extends to the leading institutions and events as well as the sport’s top players and younger talent.

Rolex and Tennis

ROLEX & THE US OPEN

The US Open is the final Grand Slam® tournament of the tennis season. As a privileged partner of the sport worldwide, Rolex has been associated with this event since 2018.

As a vital partner of tennis, Rolex has been Official Timekeeper of the US Open since 2018.

Inaugurated in 1881, this tournament has been played on the hard surface at Flushing Meadows, New York, since 1978. Among the 17 competition courts is the largest in the world, Arthur Ashe Stadium, with a seating capacity of more than 23,500.

A FUSION OF ENERGY

The US Open is know for its electric ambiance, a reflection of new york itself, “the city that never sleeps”. At this vibrant, dynamic event – played at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center – the action also unfolds in the stands, where spectators are now afraid to give voice to their excitement.

During matches, the energy emanating from the fans, the court and the city converge to galvanize the players.

ROLEX TESTIMONEES
AND THE US OPEN

Amid this incandescent atmosphere, matches at the Grand Slam have become the stuff of legend. The five consecutive titles Roger Federer won at Flushing Meadows from 2004 at 2008 are etched in memory.

Among its other tennis Testimonees, Rolex counts a host of fellow US Open winners: Rod Laver, Chris Evert, Stefan Edberg, Pat Rafter, Justin Henin, Juan Martin del Porto, Angelique Kerber, Sloane Stephens, Bianca Andreescu and Dominic Thiem. In 2022, Iga Świątek and Carlos Alcaraz added their names to this impressive list.

They embody technical precision and the quest to become a better version of oneself.

THE TOURNAMENT OF TRAILBLAZERS

The US Open is fertile ground for innovation in tennis. From introducing the tiebreak and scheduling games at night, to implementing Hawk-Eye Live – a digital refereeing system that makes line calls immediately – every effort is made to ensure the tournament remains as compelling as ever.

ROLEX AND TENNIS: PARTNERS FOR MORE THAN 40 YEARS

Since Rolex first partnered with the The Championships, Wimbledon, in 1978, the brand has enjoyed a privileged relationship with tennis, one founded on shared values: the perpetual quest for excellence, a passion for precision and innovation, the elegance of movement, unwavering effort, a respect for tradition and the drive to always push beyond personal limits.

Over the years, Rolex has extended its involvement in the sport, becoming the Premium Partner of world tennis in both the men’s and women’s game.

The brand supports most of the major competitions, including all four Grand Slam® tournaments, the season-ending ATP and WTA Finals, the high-status ATP Masters and WTA 1000 tournaments, and the premier international team contests, the Davis Cup Finals and the Laver Cup.
